Rotary Club of Mount Victoria Inc.

District 9940 - Wellington, New Zealand

The Rotary Club of Mount Victoria is a small club numbering less than 20 members. We were chartered in June 1984 as the first evening club in downtown Wellington.

We meet every Tuesday evening from 5-30pm to 7-30pm generally at the Wellesley Boutique Hotel, 2-8 Maginnity Street, Wellington. The location of the Wellesley Hotel can be found at Map.

Visitors are very welcome but please be aware that as we have been selected for the Rotary International Pilot "Innovative and Flexible Rotary Club" programme the format of our meeting varies from week to week. To read the proposed activity for our next meeting please go to our weekly Bulletin at Bulletin. If you are proposing to attend one of our meetings it would be helpful if you let us know on Attending.

We are the proud sponsers of the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation of the Rotary Club of Mount Victoria. The New Zealand $5 banknote features an image of Sir Edmund Hillary. We launched the Sir Edmund Hillary New Zealand $5 Banknote Project in April 1994 to raise funds for the Himalayan Trust, established by Sir Edmund, for humanitarian work such as hospital and school construction in the Himalayan area of Nepal. For further information on our Sir Edmund Hillary $5 Banknote project please go to Notes.

After the successful launch of the $5 banknote project we rebadged ourselves to commemorate this project, including changing our Wellington, New Zealand Post Office Box Number to 1953 (the year Sir Edmund climbed Mount Everest).

In addition to funds raised for the Himalayan Trust through the $5 note project we have raised thousands of dollars for the community over the past twenty seven years. Some significant projects undertaken by the Club over this period include:

  • Port of Wellington Open Days
  • Charity openings of Government Buildings
  • Selling light sticks to aid Dr Hollow’s eye programme
  • Organising a Last Night at the Proms event with the NZSO
  • Supporting the Mt Cook Primary School in Wellington
  • Participating in various street day appeals
  • An annual raffle of tickets to the International Rugby Sevens Tournament
  • Selling Sunflowers on Valentines Day as a fund raiser for a selected charity
  • The donation of a "Headstart" Defibrillator to the Samoa National Hospital
